Aging Credentials: A Brutally Honest Assessment of Which IT Certifications Hold Their Value Over Time

The certification industry has a vested interest in convincing professionals that every credential it offers is a permanent career asset. The reality is considerably more complicated. IT certifications exist on a relevance spectrum that ranges from genuinely durable to quietly obsolete, and the position of any given credential on that spectrum shifts continuously as the technology landscape evolves beneath it.

Understanding where your current certifications sit on that spectrum — and where the ones you are considering earning will sit three years from now — is one of the most practically valuable analytical exercises an IT professional can undertake. This assessment examines the factors that determine certification longevity, reviews how specific categories of credentials have aged in recent years, and identifies the quiet but critical distinction between a certification that has technically expired and one that has become professionally irrelevant.

The Four Factors That Determine Certification Longevity

Before examining specific credentials, it is worth establishing the framework that governs how any certification ages. Four variables account for the majority of the variance in long-term credential value.

Technology velocity in the underlying domain. Certifications in domains where the underlying technology changes rapidly depreciate faster than those in slower-moving fields. Cloud platform certifications, for example, operate in an environment where service offerings, console interfaces, and architectural best practices evolve continuously. A credential that accurately reflected AWS best practices in 2020 may describe an approach that is now considered outdated. Conversely, certifications in domains like networking fundamentals or project management methodology — where core principles are more stable — tend to retain their signal longer.

Vendor recertification requirements. Vendors that require recertification every two to three years are implicitly communicating that their exams test material with a meaningful shelf life — material current enough to require periodic revalidation. Vendors that allow credentials to persist indefinitely are often certifying foundational knowledge that changes slowly. Both models produce durable credentials when the underlying domain warrants them; the mismatch occurs when a fast-moving domain is paired with a lax recertification requirement.

Market adoption of the certified technology. A certification in a technology that has since been supplanted by a successor platform ages poorly regardless of its technical validity. The knowledge remains real, but the credential no longer signals relevance to hiring managers who are not deploying that technology. This is the mechanism through which many once-prestigious certifications have become resume footnotes.

Hiring manager perception versus technical validity. This distinction is more important than it initially appears. A certification can remain technically accurate — the knowledge it validates is still applicable — while simultaneously losing the perception of relevance among the hiring managers and recruiters who evaluate it. Perception-based depreciation tends to be faster and harder to reverse than knowledge-based depreciation.

Credentials That Age Well: The Durable Category

Certain certifications have demonstrated consistent long-term value and show structural characteristics that suggest continued durability.

CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional). The CISSP has maintained strong market relevance for well over a decade and continues to command premium compensation premiums in the US market. Its durability derives from two sources: it tests security governance and risk management principles rather than specific tool configurations, and the underlying security management framework it validates evolves slowly relative to the security landscape as a whole. A CISSP earned three years ago remains a credible signal today, provided the holder has kept pace with continuing education requirements.

PMP (Project Management Professional). The PMP occupies a similar position in the project management domain. Its longevity reflects the fact that it certifies a management methodology rather than a technology implementation, and methodologies change on decade-long timescales rather than annual ones. The 2021 exam revision, which incorporated agile and hybrid approaches, demonstrated that PMI actively updates the credential to track market evolution — a positive signal for long-term relevance.

CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert). The CCIE has long functioned as something closer to a professional credential than a vendor certification, and its reputation in the enterprise networking market reflects that status. Hiring managers in large enterprise and service provider environments continue to treat an active CCIE as a significant differentiator, even as network virtualization and software-defined networking have shifted portions of the underlying skill set.

Credentials With Accelerated Depreciation: The Risk Category

Other certification categories show structural characteristics that accelerate relevance decay.

Entry-level cloud certifications (AWS Cloud Practitioner, Azure Fundamentals, Google Cloud Digital Leader). These credentials serve a legitimate purpose as validation of foundational cloud literacy, but their market signal weakens quickly. Hiring managers increasingly treat cloud fundamentals as a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator, and a Cloud Practitioner certification earned three years ago by a candidate who has not progressed to associate or professional-level credentials raises questions about career trajectory rather than answering them.

Legacy infrastructure certifications in deprecated technologies. Certifications tied to technologies that organizations are actively migrating away from — certain virtualization platforms, legacy storage architectures, and on-premises directory services — face the dual challenge of declining job posting frequency and shrinking pools of hiring managers who can accurately evaluate the credential's value. The knowledge may still be applicable in specific environments, but the credential's ability to open doors narrows as the installed base of the underlying technology contracts.

Vendor-specific certifications in consolidating markets. When vendor consolidation occurs — through acquisition, market exit, or platform sunsetting — certifications tied to the acquired or discontinued platform often lose market value rapidly, regardless of the technical validity of the knowledge they represent.

The Technically Expired Versus Professionally Obsolete Distinction

This is perhaps the most practically important distinction in the entire analysis, and it is one that most credentialing discussions conflate or ignore.

A certification that is technically expired has lapsed according to the vendor's recertification requirements. The candidate has not completed the continuing education or recertification exam required to maintain active status. This is a correctable administrative condition. The underlying knowledge is still present. The credential can often be reinstated through a recertification exam that is less demanding than the original. Many hiring managers, particularly those with technical backgrounds, understand that a lapsed certification held by an experienced practitioner still signals genuine expertise.

A certification that is professionally obsolete is a different situation entirely. The credential may still be technically active — the vendor may not even require recertification — but the technology it validates is no longer meaningfully deployed in the environments where the candidate is seeking employment. No amount of administrative action corrects this condition. The credential has simply run its useful life in the current market.

Knowing which situation applies to any given credential in your portfolio determines whether the correct response is a recertification exam or a strategic decision to let the credential retire gracefully and replace it with something more current.

Building a Relevance-Aware Credentialing Strategy

The practical implication of this analysis is that a sound credentialing strategy requires periodic reassessment, not just forward planning. At least annually, review your active certifications against three questions: Is the underlying technology still actively deployed in your target market? Is the credential still appearing in job postings for roles you want? And has the vendor updated the exam content to reflect current practices?

Credentials that pass all three tests are worth maintaining actively. Those that fail one or more may warrant a deliberate decision about whether renewal investment is justified by the expected return — or whether the same investment is better directed toward a credential with stronger forward relevance.

The certifications that serve your career best are not necessarily the ones you worked hardest to earn. They are the ones you manage most deliberately over time.
